TLR-7 X By Streamlight: Review

Building upon the tried and true TLR-7 series of weapon lights, Streamlight just came out with the TLR-7 X which debuted at SHOT Show 2024. This new dual-fuel model is intended to be a replacement for the original TLR-7 weapon light while maintaining holster compatibility. The TLR-7 X introduces a rechargeable CR123A size battery, equipped with a USB C port for easy charging.

This update makes the TLR-7 X a multi-fuel device, allowing users to interchangeably use the rechargeable Streamlight SL-B9 battery or the traditional CR123A without the need for additional accessories. Run time is listed as 1.5 hours at 500 lumens with a CR123A or 1.0 hours using the SL-B9 rechargeable battery.

Out of the Box

Straight out of the box, this weapon light includes interchangeable paddle switches, a multi-tool, and an SL-B9 rechargeable battery. It also comes with a USB-C cord, various rail keys, a sticker, and an owner’s manual. Available in black or FDE, this WML can be powered by either a single CR123A or SL-B9 battery. This provides users with the flexibility to best suit their preferences.

Compatibility of the TLR-7 X

The TLR-7 X includes a range of rail keys designed to accommodate a diverse array of pistols. These keys feature different widths to ensure a secure fit on the various bottom rails used by pistol manufacturers.

Moreover, a crucial point to highlight is that the TLR-7 X maintains compatibility with holsters designed for the TLR-7 series of lights. This eliminates the hassle of determining whether a new light justifies the need for updated holsters, providing added convenience for users.

Controls

Operating the controls on the Streamlight TLR-7 X is a breeze and feels familiar, especially for someone like me who has been carrying a pistol with the TLR-7A for years without any major gripes. The TLR-7 X maintains the same user-friendly controls and bears a striking resemblance to its predecessor, with the only noticeable difference being the updated model number engraved on the side.

In the box, you’ll find both a high and low switch, with the high switch already installed at the factory. I prefer this configuration, but having the option to switch is a nice touch for added flexibility.

Battery life

The run time of the Streamlight TLR-7 X varies depending on the battery type used. With a single CR123A, you can expect approximately 1.5 hours of usage, while the included rechargeable Streamlight SL-B9 provides around 1.0 hours. The option for a rechargeable battery is appreciated, though for personal carry, I’ll stick to the CR123A, as I have with the older TLR-7A. This preference is also partly due to Streamlight’s recommendation that the SL-B9 operates best at temperatures above -4°F, compared to the -40°F tolerance of a CR123A. Despite this, rechargeable batteries offer convenience and cost savings, making them a viable option for many users.

To charge the SL-B9 battery, simply remove it from the weapon light and use the provided USB-C cord. Charging takes approximately 2.5 hours to reach full capacity.

Testing the TLR-7 X

While I have put thousands of rounds downrange using other variants of the TLR-7 series, I am only at a couple hundred with this new TLR-7 X. However, I’m pleased to note that it has performed flawlessly thus far. Utilizing the same body and footprint as the older tried and true models, I also predict it will continue to hold up just fine. With a light output of 500 lumens and 5,000 candela, this WML delivers impressive illumination. Streamlight claims a beam distance of 140 meters, which may seem slightly generous in terms of usable illumination but remains nonetheless impressive.

Conclusion

For the size, the Streamlight TLR-7 X is well worth its weight. The beam pattern provides a wide field of view with all the throw needed for for pistol shooting scenarios. While the switch design is standard across several Streamlight WMLs, it functions smoothly and is effortless to activate.

Priced between $140 and $157, depending on color and battery choice, the TLR-7 X offers excellent value for money. Leveraging a proven platform and backed by Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty, this WML is a dependable choice that I have no hesitation in recommending for everyday carry.
