BIRMINGHAM, AL (1-minute read) — A 3-year-old boy is recovering at the hospital after being shot in the leg early Sunday morning. Birmingham police responded to the Forest Hills Village Apartment Complex on Tempest Drive just before 8 a.m., where they discovered the injured toddler inside a bedroom.

According to family members, gunfire erupted outside the apartment, penetrating a bedroom wall and striking the child.

Police officers apprehended two men following a brief foot chase near the scene. One suspect was caught attempting to climb a fence, while the other was detained in the parking lot where a firearm was recovered. Authorities have not confirmed if the two men are connected to the shooting, but felony assault detectives are conducting interviews to determine their involvement.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald emphasized the tragic impact of criminal activity on innocent bystanders, particularly children. “Our decisions as adults have consequences that affect the most vulnerable in our community,” he stated.

The boy’s injuries are not considered life-threatening, but the incident highlights the dangers of stray bullets in densely populated areas like apartment complexes. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Safety Tip: Always store firearms securely and away from unauthorized access to prevent accidents or misuse. Consider using a gun safe or lock to ensure safety.
